Sequels. Yay or Nay?

IGN wrote a superb article on sequels, detailing whether games, as entertaining mediums, need to have sequels or not. They mentioned Assassin's Creed 2, which developed on everything that it lacked in the previous game. They also mentioned Mass Effect games by Bioware as one of those rare games that stand out as a self-contained story as much as they do as parts of an epic trilogy and franchise.
